A little fact about me; I love cleaning. There is no better feeling than giving your room a good clear out and I do believe clean room = clean mind. Then what better way to start Spring than to take the plunge and get stuck in cleaning. 9 times of of 10 you're going to find something you thought you've lost (for me it was a single eyelash from the SoSue range - it was my favorite set so I was delirah!). If you're a hoarder, get ready for a couple of hours going through all the memorabilia you've amounted over the years.
Follow the tips below and best of luck!
1.) Clear out:
The only way to give your room a good airing out is to remove everything! This also allows you to see how much room you have and to start planning how you want your room to look.
2.) Dust, clean furniture:
This especially applies if you have a desk or table where you apply your make-up. Surfaces can get grubby looking and can be a HAZARD zone if you're wearing white (just ask the elbows of my white shirt). A cloth and some warm water is all you need, maybe some surface spray for pesky eyeliner splatters. Taking the time to give your furniture a once-over can restore them to their former glory.
3.) Play around with your floor plan:
Move your bed around. I find you have two options here: a) keep it as the centre piece of your room and place your furniture around it or b) push it against a far wall and decorated it as a couch during the day-time. You'd be surprised with how different a room can look and feel by moving things around.
You'll get a crick in your neck from that window being so close to your bed
4.) Keep it simple:Personal preference here but muted (creams, greys, whites) walls and furniture are the way to go. This allows you to change up the atmosphere in your room each season without the possibility of clashing colours or having to spend a fortune - seasonal candles and a couple of in-season pieces (like flowers in a vase during spring) are cheap but change the feel of a room.
5.) Photo's - put them up:
You don't need an Instax camera - disposable cameras can be great fun to mess around with or most camera shops do deals on printing photo's in bulk (I know Kodak let you print 100 for €15) so if your camera roll is fit to burst with pics, now is the time to put them to use.
6.) Tackle your make-up drawer:
Take out all your make-up and skincare. Us girls like to accumulate make-up - like squirrels burying their nuts for winter - so it's easy to forget what we have. It turns out I had FIFTEEN red lipsticks. Who on this earth needs that many?! Answer: no.one. And by the way, make up does expire..here's a list I found on PopSugar of when it's time for the bin for some of your cosmetics:
Mascara | Four months |
Foundation | One Year |
Concealer | 12-18 months |
Powder | 18 months |
Blush/bronzer | 18 months |
Cream blush | 12-18 months |
Eye shadow | 18 months |
Eyeliner | 18 months |
Liquid eyeliner | Six months |
Eyeliner | 18 months |
Liquid eyeliner | Six months |
Lipstick/lip gloss | 18 months |
Lip liner | One year |
Nail polish | One year |
Makeup sponges | Wash after each use, then throw away after a month. |
This applies to your skincare products but fortunately most come with a symbol (below) on when how long before it's time to dump it. To ensure you're not putting expired products on your face, write the date of when your first opened it on a piece of paper and sellotape it to the product - easy!
6.1.) Make-up (cont..)
I like to display my brushes so they're easy to find and a simple trick for storing make-up is pour rice into your brush container (about 1/3 of the way). You're brushes will stand up right so no more rooting. For storing make-up, I use old perfume gift set box lids; the ideal size for most make up drawers.
7.) Clothes - keep, store, donate, throw away
The best way to do this is literally throw every item of clothing on the bed; socks, knickers and all. Divide your clothes into four sections: keep, store (for seasonal wear), donate, throw away. Anything with holes or tears that can't be fixed by a dressmaker or you got for a fiver off AliExpress just throw it away.
Plastic storage boxes can be bought in most hardware stores and can keep your seasonal wear fresh, unlike cardboard boxes. Mammy O' Connell - organised as she is - suggests writing a list of everything that's going in to the box and tape this to the front so you don't spent ages looking for that one coat. As for donations, there are plenty of charity shops nationwide that would be delighted with your clothes, or if you and your friends have similar tastes in clothes, have a swap night where they bring they're old clothes too; you never know, you might end up with a few new bits for your wardrobe.
8.) Keep it clean!
Take 5 mins every morning and night to clear your desk, hang your clothes, line up your shoes etc...
And one more thing, MAKE YOUR BED. It's take 0.457345 seconds to do and you'll feel like an organised adult, even if you're the kind of adult who eats cereal for dinner.
The end result |
Key Pieces for your room
- Bookshelf - somewhere to display your books. Or shoes. Or both (in my case)
- Clothes rail - use it to display your aesthetically pleasing clothes. Keep the practical ones for the wardrobe
- Fairy lights - not just for Christmas.
- Wall Stickers - a cheap way to put the finish touch on your room.
- Candles - three words: Penney's Pillar Candles. €2.50, sorted.
